Permaculture and hydroponics internship in Peru
Permaculture and hydroponics internship in Peru

Useful information

Join our team in helping and supporting the locals by teaching them hydroponics techniques with this environmental internship opportunity. The rural villages where we are located are lands where droughts and poor soil are the main problems. We want to change this reality and help families in need by providing sustainable food solutions for them and their livestock.

Description of the program

Get ready to go green and help us incorporate sustainable practices, which would not only improve food but also the living conditions of communities, with this environmental internship proposal.

We are training families in the rural community of Shaullio Grande to use grow trays and hydroponic drip systems, as that will allow them to grow plants and vegetables faster than outdoors in the ground, year round.

Like all of our environmental internship programs, the environmental conservation project in Peru allows students to gain university credits while having a positive and sustainable impact on the region's ecosystem.

Plants grown with hydroponic systems have higher yields, require less space and use less water than a conventional garden. This is what you will be able to observe with this environmental internship. Together we can help the locals to sustainably produce lettuce, spinach, chard, kale... But also herbs such as basil, oregano, fruits such as tomatoes and chillies that they will use for their personal consumption as well as for their livestock and the preservation of the flora of endemic plants.

Schedule:

Monday (first week only): introduction to projects, house rules, health and safety tips. Discovery of the city of Cajamarca and Peruvian culture. Cultural visit, the main shops will be pointed out, and purchase of a SIM card if needed.

Tuesday to Friday:

  • Breakfast
  • Hydroponic work
  • Lunch
  • Free time
  • Dinner

Schedule may change depending on weather conditions and unforeseen events.

Definition of hydroponics: it is a set of techniques to grow plants above ground. This makes it possible to grow without any soil, which is particularly poor here, thanks to a mineral or inert vegetable substrate.

So participate in sustainable cultivation with the local community on this environmental internship.

Host organization

Our partner NGO offers a secure environment and a local team that takes care of the volunteers and manages all the logistics on their projects.

Since 1998, they have been offering the opportunity to participate in solidarity programs ranging from education to support and development of local communities, as well as wildlife and environmental conservation.

Their values: we are not passive spectators, but we encourage a practical approach, "we get our hands dirty". The placements require active participation of the interns and real commitment. The feedback from our participants is unanimous: "an enrichment beyond my expectations", "a project that changed my life".
