This diverse project has enormous potential to improve the level of primary healthcare provided to rural communities in Tanzania. This internship focuses on improving healthcare through education and awareness, as well as supporting medical treatment. Participants with different levels of experience and knowledge can be invaluable in helping either in community work or in medical hospitals with the right resources.
If you’re wondering how to find a medical internship, we have a solution.
As part of this project, you may work in two different hospitals, depending on availability. One is located in the Moshi region of Tanzania. This is a District Designated Hospital (DDH) based in Singa village, Kibosho East Division. The hospital has ten departments: men, women, pediatrics, maternity, ante-natal, post-natal, post-surgical, dental…
The second hospital is located in Moshi. It is a district hospital that treats about 150 patients per day. The site has four core departments: surgery, gynaecology, pediatrics and outpatient services. Interns may work in any department. Women and children under the age of five are admitted and treated free of charge at the hospital.
Like all of our nursing and medical internship programs abroad, this project in Tanzania allows students to gain university credits while acquiring field experience and contributing to the UN’s goal of universal access to health care.
Feel part of the community and experience the hospitality and culture of this friendly community.
Assist and gain valuable experience in providing primary medical care.
Provide necessary health care and education to disadvantaged children and communities.
Contribute to the awareness and reduction of the incidence of epidemic diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria.
Train local volunteers in a vital and sustainable home care program.
Be part of a rewarding and sustainable project.
Participants’ tasks will depend on their experience, interests, and the most important need at the time. Below you will find different areas where volunteers are needed to help:
Outpatient Department : Receiving patients, registering patients, checking vital signs, assisting physicians with patient histories and treatment administration, assisting in the lab, pharmacy, emergency department and conducting clinics on HIV, diabetes, etc.
Surgical Department: Prepare patients for major and minor surgeries, assist in the operating rooms during surgeries, follow up with patients on the wards after surgeries, morning rounds with doctors and nurses.
Department of Gynaecology: Assisting in prenatal clinics, assisting with deliveries and C-sections, assisting in postnatal clinics, doing morning rounds with doctors and nurses.
Department of Pediatrics: Assistance with treatments and vaccinations for children. Assist in the pediatric wards, doing morning rounds with the doctors and nurses.
HIV Care and Treatment: Here, trainees provide counselling and check-ups for people living with HIV.
Community health services: Volunteers can organise preventative workshops in villages if sufficient funds are raised.
You will work a full day between 8:30am and 4pm, including a lunch break. Each day can offer a new experience.
7am : Breakfast
7:20 a.m.: Departure for the hospital
8:30 a.m.: Start of work at the facility
1:00-1:30 pm: Lunch at the hospital if it’s a long day
2pm-4pm: You will take a bus back to the accommodation if it is a short day, otherwise you will continue working
4pm : Departure from the hospital
6pm : Dinner
Saturdays and Sundays are free days.
Please note that, from time to time, unavoidable changes may be made to projects. These changes may be caused by weather conditions, conservation priorities, material supply, or because ongoing projects have progressed faster or slower than originally planned. We ask you to accept the changes (we are sure you will appreciate the replacement projects as well).
Evenings are free and can be spent relaxing in the volunteer house, reading, playing games and meeting other participants. The project coordinators will help you organise day or weekend trips if you wish.

Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.
The participants' hostel is located in the northern part of Tanzania, at the foot of Kilimanjaro. It can accommodate up to 50 volunteers at a time.
There is a mix of traditional rooms and permanent safari tents in the garden, with some double and twin rooms as well as dormitories with three, four or six beds. All bedding is provided. You must bring your own towel and toiletries.
The driver will pick you up at the airport upon your arrival and drop you off at the project's accommodation. This is an additional cost of 40 USD that the trainee will have to pay to the driver. The same applies to the transfer back to the airport on the day of departure. Transfers between the project accommodation and the project chosen by the volunteer are at the volunteer's expense. Here is a cost estimate:
Some projects are within walking distance (5 to 40 minutes).
Using public transportation to get to the projects will cost approximately 1 USD per trip.
Using a private cab will cost about 3 USD per trip.
Transportation between the hostel and the projects can be done on foot, by public minibus, cab or tuk-tuk. Interns will be required to pay for their own transportation to the projects.
Volunteers can shop in the city's stores, markets and supermarkets, which will be introduced to them during the city tour. Most of the stores are within walking distance of the city. There are also several bars and clubs that students can visit on weekends accompanied by the manager.
There are several banks with ATMs within walking distance of the hostel. You can use your Visa, MasterCard or Maestro on these machines. Our volunteer leader will show you the banks where the withdrawal fees are lower during the city tour.
It is possible to obtain a visa upon arrival at the airport for US$50.
For any international project, Real-step requires the purchase of travel insurance including coverage in case of accident, illness, repatriation and civil liability.
Note that liability insurance is included in the insurance policies of our partner Chapka Cap Student, and Cap Working Holiday because it is mandatory for internships and studies abroad. If you buy your Cap Student or Cap Working Holiday insurance online with our partner Chapka, you get 5% immediate discount by clicking on one of the 2 links above!
If you subscribe to another travel insurance, we will ask you to send us a certificate in English.
