How to become a global citizen? Top global citizen skills

What does it mean to be a global citizen?
According to What Are Global Citizenship Skills?, there are 3 core dimensions of Global Citizenship Education, but they apply to understanding what it means to be a global citizen here.

1. The cognitive dimension

Understanding and thinking critically about global and local issues, and viewing them as interconnected.

2. The socio-emotional dimension

Having a sense of common values with people from other communities, empathy, respect for differences, and a sense of shared humanity. ​

3. The behavioural dimension

Acting at all levels! Global and local, for global preservation.

Global citizenship is a sense of belonging to a broader community. If a person understands they are a part of a bigger whole, a part of a broader community, and acts to make a positive contribution to the community, then they can be considered a global citizen.

Top global citizen skills

Global citizen skills partially overlap with 21st century skills. At the core are:
  • information and technology literacy,
  • life and career skills,
  • learning and innovation skills (critical thinking, creativity, communication).

Information, media & tech literacy

  • Information literacy means to accurately comprehend information, meaning.
  • Media literacy is familiarity with the various media through which information is produced/shared.
  • Technology literacy means to understand and use digital tools and softwares.

Critical and creative thinking

  • Critical thinking is the ability to question and analyse the facts, your own thinking process (metacognition), knowledge sources, and make judgement.
  • Creative thinking means being able to find creative, original solutions to a problem.

 

Flexibility & initiative

  • Flexibility is defined as the ability to adapt and change plans as required, having in mind the original goal.
  • Taking initiative means to act without being asked to do so. Starting things, setting goals, working towards making a change.

How to develop global citizen skills?

Besides formal education, becoming a global citizen requires engaging in some extracurricular and fun activities.

Read more of authors from different cultures

  • Read books written by people from other cultures and subcultures.
  • The same goes for watching movies, listening to music, podcasts, influencers - explore those made by people from different cultures and regions. If you grew up in France, you might read a book, or listen to music from another country.

 

Travel with a purpose, or just travel and explore

  • Travel abroad to learn about other cultures, history, food, music, sports, art.
  • Learning language basics and the way of life of the country you are travelling to.

Start learning a language

  • A big part of learning a language is learning about its cultural context.
  • Even if you are not good at languages, you can learn about the culture, the past of the language, how it is different or similar to yours.

Find cross-cultural passion, such as cooking

  • Explore different cuisines
  • Explore which ingredients and tools are used, and where to find them

Intern abroad

  • Connect with a student from another country
  • Connect via internship programs from another country
  • Take an internship abroad, experience first hand.

Volunteering abroad

  • Participate, engage, work for a cause
  • Join programs with a global cause
