Guaranteed Working Holiday Visa Program in Canada – How Does It Work?

This program allows young people aged 18 to 35 to obtain a 2-year working holiday visa to work in Canada, offering an exciting experience full of learning and discovery.

By enrolling in a3 month intensive English course at an accredited school, you will become eligible for a working holiday visa to work in Canada. The schools are located in Toronto and Vancouver, perfect for a full immersion in the Canadian culture.

We start with 3 months of intensive English

During these three months of classes in Toronto and Vancouver, you’ll improve your English to be ready to work in Canada. It’s possible to extend beyond 3 months depending on your preferences and the desired level.

In addition, you’ll take part in practical workshops to create a Canadian-standard resume and get privileged access to job opportunities through the school’s professional network.

Then move on to a paid job in hospitality

For those who want to find a job right after the 3-month course, the school places its students in hospitality and restaurant sector jobs (minimum 3-month contract) to help with a smooth and quick professional integration.

This support is optional and is offered to students who want to start paid work as soon as possible, regardless of the sector. Of course, you’ll have the option to choose other paths and apply independently later on.

In summary:

  • You get a guaranteed WHV to work in Canada for up to 2 years.
  • Minimum 3 months of English course at an accredited institution in Toronto or Vancouver (option to extend the English course period).
  • Full support for your job search.

Course organization (Toronto and Vancouver)

You’ll take a placement test upon arrival to assess your level and be placed in the appropriate group. 19 hours of classes per week from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and from 9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Friday.

In addition to English classes, you’ll receive training to help with your job search and may start working during your free time.

Visa approval process

Here are the steps you’ll go through to obtain your visa through this program:

  1. First, you need to apply for the school’s 3-month intensive course.
  2. After approval, proceed with payment and receive an admission letter issued by the school.
  3. Then you’ll receive an invitation to apply for the WHV and, once submitted (from your home country), you’ll receive a confirmation (also from your home country).
  4. Your working holiday visa is approved (within 3 to 4 weeks), and you can then plan your trip!
  5. Upon arrival in Canada, your visa is “activated” and stamped in your passport.
  6. Finally, you can start looking for a paid job while attending English classes for the first 12 weeks (or longer if you choose to extend your English studies).

Your accommodation

Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.

The school offers several housing options, either with a host family or in a residence with other international students. The school's accommodations are usually located between 10 and 30 minutes from the school by metro and close to all amenities.

Housing is optional and can only be arranged when you are enrolled in English courses. You should budget around €1250 per month for student accommodation in Toronto or Vancouver.

Meals

Meals are generally not included, but participants will have access to a kitchen to prepare their own meals.

A gap year is a period (often 6 to 12 months) during which you temporarily pause your studies or work to have a meaningful, structured experience: travel, volunteering, internship, job, personal project

It can be done at any time, for the duration you choose, and in the field you want. The goal is to help you explore new possibilities for your personal and/or professional path.

Real Step offers a wide range of gap year programs abroad in various fields.

Anyone! A gap year can be taken at any age and is not limited to 18–25-year-olds. It can be done at any stage of life—whether for a career change, a lifestyle change, to explore different options, or to refine a professional project.

A gap year allows you to:

  • Gain maturity
  • Improve your language skills
  • Discover a country, its culture, and its people
  • Develop transferable skills (soft skills, independence, organization)
  • Clarify your academic, professional, or personal goals

It depends on the country and your project. Make sure to budget for:

  • Flights
  • Health and repatriation insurance
  • Visa and administrative fees
  • Accommodation and food (depending on what’s included)
  • Local transport + activities
  • An emergency buffer (very important)

Internships during a gap year are varied, and you have a wide choice of fields:

  • Environmental protection
  • Animal welfare and conservation
  • Humanitarian internships
  • Internships in the medical sector
  • Communication and marketing (business)
  • Engineering internships
  • Hospitality and catering

Even though some details vary depending on the country, here are the main steps:

  • Check your eligibility
  • Create an online account on the destination country’s official portal
  • Prepare the required documents (passport, insurance, CV, etc.)
  • Pay the visa fees
  • Wait for confirmation or the lottery draw
  • Receive your visa
