Description

Program description

Work in exchange for free accommodation in more than 10 hostels across Australia and New Zealand, in a dynamic and friendly work environment.

The program’s tasks are mainly in the fields of hospitality and tourism, but can extend to other broader areas if you show commitment and motivation: social media, marketing, event planning, etc.

Positions are available year-round in Australia and only during the summer in New Zealand (departures only between September and October). For detailed conditions, please contact us.

Orientation

The first week will be dedicated to your informal orientation within the hostel. You can participate in local excursions (surf initiation, trips to the Blue Mountains, or kayaking with dolphins) to get familiar with the region.

You can also take part in the hostel’s daily events to better promote them to guests.

Your role

You will work alongside the maintenance manager to understand the layout of different room types and accommodation standards. You will then begin a fully supervised reception training.

This training will include learning the following tasks:

  • Welcoming and checking in/out guests
  • Managing reservations
  • Answering phone calls
  • Carrying out hostel audit procedures
  • Assisting guests and responding to their requests
  • Managing guest accounts
  • Promoting, organizing, and hosting hostel activities
  • Selling various items
  • Housekeeping and cleaning duties
  • Handling banking operations and cash register checks
  • Following reception procedures and daily task lists
  • Ensuring the reception, lobby, and common areas are well-presented
  • Providing excellent customer service at all times

After two weeks, you should be fully trained in reception tasks and will enjoy greater autonomy.

Working hours will depend on the requirements and duration of your placement. This can range between 24 to 38 hours per week.

If you are skilled in marketing and comfortable with English, you may have greater flexibility in your assignments. Responsibilities can evolve quickly based on your motivation and skills.

Participant FAQ

  • Is there an orientation/training during the first week?

There is no formal orientation, but the first week is dedicated to participating in hostel activities and exploring some local visits when possible. You will meet your supervisor early on for an overview of the role, expectations, and team introductions.

  • Will I be working full-time, or can I do part-time?

Full-time is preferred to help you get the most out of the experience, but part-time may be considered depending on your profile. It is important to note that part-time interns may not receive all the benefits or compensation offered to full-time interns.

  • How far in advance can my placement be confirmed?

There is no specific confirmation deadline, but we do our best to notify you as early as possible so you can prepare with peace of mind.

  • What field can I apply for?

We offer general internships in reception/hospitality throughout the year in various locations in Australia for this program. If you have a specific goal, we will do our best to guide you and match your expectations.

Your accommodation

Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.

In exchange for your work, get free accommodation in a shared apartment with other students or staff members. Included bed linen, blankets, and towels.

Free Internet/Wi-Fi access and laundry facilities.

Working in hospitality is a unique opportunity to save money while on a Working Holiday Visa, as a dormitory night in Australia typically costs between $40-$60. Over three months of hospitality work, you could save up to $4500!

Meals

Meals are generally not included, but participants will have access to a kitchen to prepare their own meals.
