Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.
You will be accommodated in a shared house on a farm. The house has 5 bedrooms, each of which can accommodate two people. A shower and toilets are available. An internet connection is available.
The workplace is located about 20 minutes from the accommodation by horse-drawn carriage or motorbike.
Near the accommodation, you will find the farm’s gardens, a forest perfect for walks, as well as the sea. About 5 km away, there is a small town with markets and small shops.
Breakfast and dinner are included in the program.
Upon your arrival at Dakar airport, a member of the team will come to pick you up and drive you to your accommodation. The journey takes around two hours. Once you arrive at your destination, you will be welcomed by the rest of the team. You will then be shown around your accommodation and the surrounding area, and you will share a meal together.
The project is located very close to the Saloum River. During your free time, you can explore one of the surrounding forests or head to the nearest town to attend traditional concerts or community celebrations with the local people.
The Saloum Delta National Park is not only a source of income for fishers and shellfish gatherers, it is also an exciting attraction for tourists. The best option is to book a boat trip to admire the many waterways and the diversity of plant and animal species. The local fishers who lead this excursion are ambassadors of UNESCO World Heritage.
