Description

Program description

You will join an NGO involved in various fields such as water supply (well construction, installation of sanitation facilities and irrigation systems), ecological farming, access to education, support for disadvantaged populations, environmental protection, and the construction of eco-friendly buildings.

You have 2 internship options depending on your interests and skills.

The construction project aims to create a new training centre using environmentally friendly methods. The environmental project offers the opportunity to discover positive practices that help raise awareness of environmental protection among local populations.

Construction internship

You will work in a small traditional village of around 100 inhabitants. The current objective is to build a training centre on site, which will serve as a hub for environmental awareness.

Your role is therefore to take part in the construction of the centre, with the opportunity to closely follow the development of a project.

Your tasks

  • Contribute to the construction of the centre building and small guest houses
  • Learn and use eco-friendly methods and materials
  • Take part in village gardening: planting and watering plants and trees
  • Participate in workshops with local people

You will work six hours a day from Monday to Friday; weekends are free to explore the surrounding area.

Environmental internship

This internship allows you to discover ecological farming. The project is carried out in collaboration with local farmers. Participants work in teams, and each team pursues a specific project. You are therefore free to get involved in an area depending on your interests.

Your tasks

You will take part in the following activities:

  • Support for sustainable eco-friendly construction
  • Planting and watering vegetables and trees
  • Waste clean-up and management
  • Water treatment
  • Fishing
  • Processing of agricultural products
  • Flower production

You will work six hours a day from Monday to Friday; weekends are free.

Project information

Your accommodation

Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.

For the construction project, you will be accommodated in traditional clay huts, shared between 2 and 4 volunteers. You will have access to traditional African toilets and a shower.

The accommodation is located a few minutes’ walk from the project.

For the environmental project, you will be accommodated in a volunteers’ house or with a host family, with shared rooms. The accommodation includes a bathroom and a shared kitchen. Water, electricity, and Wi-Fi are available.

You can reach the project in a 15 to 30-minute walk, or take the bus (at your own expense).

Meals

A shared kitchen is available, where breakfast and dinner are prepared daily for participants.

Once there

The village where the construction project takes place is located in Patar, about 180 km from the capital, Dakar. The work site is a small traditional village that is part of a municipality with a total population of 15,000.

As for the environmental project, you will be based in the city of Diourbel, about 140 km from Dakar. With around 130,000 inhabitants, it is one of the country’s major urban centres.
