Description

Program description

The aim of your internship in marine conservation is to support the local team in Montenegro in the conservation of marine species, particularly cetaceans such as bottlenose dolphins and striped dolphins. These species are considered endangered due to human activity.

You will also take part in awareness-raising initiatives about cetacean protection and the importance of ocean conservation.

Your missions as an intern

You will take part in a range of tasks, such as:

  • Land-based observations at sunrise and sunset
  • Boat trips to carry out various research activities
  • Data collection on dolphin sightings and behaviour, as well as on human and environmental impacts
  • Learning and applying research techniques (spatio-temporal distribution of dolphins, use of theodolites, collection of behavioural data, photo-identification, and measurement of human influences)
  • Training in standard marine research software (Pythagoras, Logger 2010)
  • Data entry, editing, and analysis using GIS, Mark, Distance, and R
  • Cataloguing and comparing dolphin images using photo-identification software
  • Raising awareness about environmental issues
  • Using social media for public communication and to raise awareness about marine and environmental conservation

Your accommodation

Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.

You will stay in a volunteer house in shared, single-sex rooms (3 people per room).

There is a shared kitchen that you can use to prepare your meals. WiFi, hot water, and a washing machine are also provided.

You can cycle to the marine conservation and research office in about 30 minutes. Supermarkets and restaurants are only a 10-minute walk from the house.

Meals

Meals are not included, but a shared kitchen is available.
