Participants are welcome all year round to help the caretakers at Lone Pine Sanctuary look after Australia’s koalas, as well as the reserve’s kangaroos and numerous birds. Tasks are varied and include preparing and distributing food, cleaning the enclosures and welcoming visitors to the center.
If you’re looking for a field experience to practice your English or to volunteer abroad during your gap year in Australia, this project combines perfectly with English courses in Brisbane (Monday to Friday at the school, volunteering on Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 3pm).
Just a few minutes from a large park, close to public transport, stores, cinemas and restaurants.
Fully-equipped kitchen, relaxation area with table tennis and table soccer, 50 student computers, free WIFI, flat-screen TV, library (books and DVDs), free access to gym.

The animal project takes place in one of the largest koala shelters in Australia.
More than 130 koalas are protected in this natural area, which is calm and pleasant for visitors and animals alike.

Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.
The English school offers a range of accommodation options for students:
- Deluxe Homestay: private bathroom, only one student per family. Laundry and meals are generally provided (breakfast and dinner Monday to Friday/ breakfast, lunch and dinner on weekends).
- Family Homestay: shared bathroom, maximum of 2 students (of different nationalities) per family. Laundry and meals are generally provided (breakfast and dinner Monday to Friday/breakfast, lunch and dinner at weekends).
- Self catering Homestay: shared bathroom, unlimited number of students (of the same or different nationalities) per family. Students are responsible for their own laundry, and only breakfast is provided by the family.
- Student House: private, double or triple rooms, shared kitchen and bathroom, TV room/lounge to share with other students of the same or different nationalities. Minimum length of stay.
- Three two- or three-storey campuses, located in the city center.
- Easily accessible schools close to public transport.
- Also close to stores, cinemas and restaurants.
- Just minutes from a large park (Brisbane), the beach (Gold Coast) or the city (Sydney).
- A fully equipped kitchen for students.
- A relaxation area with sofas and games (table tennis, table soccer).
- Around 50 computers available to students.
- Free WIFI throughout the establishment.
- Flat-screen TV.
- A library (books and DVDs).
- Free access to the Brisbane gym.
- Bicycle and surfboard rentals (Gold Coast).
