Description

Program description

This program is an opportunity to secure a job in Canada, specifically in the Canadian Rockies region of Banff National Park. You will work in local lodges and hotels in the hospitality and restaurant sectors.

The First 3 Months

During the first few months after your arrival, the local team will teach you everything you need to know about your role and the company, as well as help you get familiar with the area and the language. At the end of this trial period, a review meeting will be held to assess your overall progress. You can then continue your work and enjoy your experience in Canada!

Your Role

Most seasonal job offers are for positions in hotels, restaurants, and spas. For example:

  • Receptionist: welcoming guests, answering calls and emails, checking guests in and out, making reservations, etc. (starting wage $16)

  • Housekeeping Assistant: sorting, washing, drying, and folding laundry. Keeping items in good condition, managing supplies, cleaning work areas, and assisting with deliveries. (starting wage $16)

  • Cook: depending on your qualifications and years of experience, your role and responsibilities may vary. You could work as a dishwasher or kitchen assistant for beginners (starting wage $16).

  • Experienced candidates will be responsible for meal preparation, stocking, and kitchen organization. (starting wage $17–$20 depending on experience level)

  • Server: your duties will generally include setting and clearing tables, serving food and drinks, and helping with cleaning. (starting wage $15)

Your tasks will therefore depend on your position, experience, and skills. All wages start at an entry level and will be reassessed within the first three months of employment.

As for working hours, you will work approximately 30 hours per week, though this may vary depending on the season and the position.

To participate in this program, 3 visa options are available for European nationals:

  • Working Holiday – either through the annual lottery or via the 3 months of intensive English + guaranteed Working Holiday Visa program
  • Young Professionals – for skilled positions (e.g., supervisors and cooks)
  • Internship – for enrolled students completing an internship in their field of study (e.g., BTS Tourism)

See all the requirements on the Work Experience Canada website.

For French nationals, the Francophone Mobility Visa

Candidates who speak and understand French at an intermediate level may be eligible. Requirements include: proof of French language proficiency, relevant work experience related to the job offer, a closed work permit tied to the employer, and a guaranteed minimum of 30 hours of work per week. Project information

Your accommodation

Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.

You can stay in shared rooms offered by the employer for CAD 17 per night. The accommodations are located about 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the workplace.

The rooms are dormitory-style with 2 to 4 people (single-sex). The bathroom is shared with a maximum of 8 housemates. You will share all common areas, including the kitchen and living room.

The house is arranged so that each person has a dedicated space in the refrigerator and cupboards.

Meals

Meals are not included in the program. Employees receive a discount at the hotel’s restaurants. Additionally, all staff accommodations are equipped with kitchens.

There are also nearby stores where you can buy groceries and find something to eat.

Once there

The town of Banff attracts over 4 million visitors each year in search of adventure and unforgettable memories.
Outside of work, you can enjoy hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and breathtaking scenery.
The region’s vibrant communities also offer great restaurants, bars, events, and a lively social scene—perfect for making friends and feeling at home quickly.
