The GLOBAL REEF / SEAGONG / THAILAND MANGROVE ALLIANCE projects are significant, collaborative projects involving various organizations as well as local universities and marine biology and ecology specialists. These projects are characterized by the rigor of our research aimed at enriching general knowledge in marine biology and contributing to studies and articles validated by the scientific community.
By participating in this project, you contribute to research and its diffusion through studies and scientific articles.
To this end, you will learn about the composition and organization of different coastal and marine ecosystems. This will lead us to coral reefs, which you will explore from various approaches to establish and continue ongoing research. You will do the same for coastal ecosystems.
This will allow you to use and handle new equipment and analytical systems.
Familiarize yourself with the different organisms that make up these ecosystems, as well as the monitoring methods, to gain concrete knowledge and skills for your future studies or professional life.
The program and its specific features are as follows:
For a typical day, hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but may be adjusted according to the type of research and weather conditions.

The partner organization of Freepackers and Realstep emphasizes responsible engagement and biodiversity protection in Thailand.
Our partner organization prioritizes safety, knowledge-sharing, and the well-being of its volunteers once on-site, so they can optimize their learning and their experience with local communities, creating memorable memories of their mission and gaining new professional skills.
The fees charged by the association help fund operational services, on-site staff, volunteer expenses (meals, accommodation, transportation, activities), and a portion of the funds is directed to the projects themselves.
This program is available up to 24 weeks, contact us to know the price and availability.
Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.
The rooms are mixed-gender and equipped with bunk beds.
This is a half-board arrangement. Accommodation and meals are included, with breakfast and lunch provided. In the evenings and on weekends, you are free to explore the surroundings at your leisure. For off-site missions, full board will be provided.
This marine biology project is located in the southwest of Thailand, in the Krabi province.
The headquarters, which includes the office and student accommodation, is located in Aonang, close to work sites as well as shops. An additional site is also located in Krabi Town.
Our research and study areas are located in the local island archipelago of Aonang, the Hong island archipelago, the intertidal zones of Aonamao and Railay, and the Similan, Surin, and Phang Nga islands.
