Program description

For this nursing internship in Cape Verde, you will work in a hospital with many wards, including:

  • An emergency department
  • Clinical analysis laboratories
  • A pharmacy
  • Basic radiology
  • Outpatient consultations
  • Public health services

Internship Objective

Complete your internship with a multicultural team once on site. You will develop your skills while discovering the Cape Verdean healthcare system.

 

Your Missions as an Intern

Your tasks are always supervised by local staff. You will assist them in their daily duties.

Your missions include:

  • Diagnosing and treating conditions: assisting local staff with their diagnoses.
  • Patient education and counseling: explaining treatment options and preventive measures.
  • Collaboration with other healthcare professionals: working with audiologists, speech therapists, or other specialists.
  • Participating in awareness campaigns.
  • Record keeping: ensuring accurate documentation of patient records.

 

Example Schedule

Monday

On the Monday of your first week, you will take part in an orientation day to get familiar with the surroundings and the local culture. Your regular program will continue from Tuesday onwards.

  • Welcome and introduction to local traditions, culture, and rules of conduct.
  • Basic Kriolu lesson
  • Exploring the surroundings: visit to local supermarkets, ATMs, and the area around our center
  • Hospital visit and theoretical orientation

 

From Tuesday to Friday

  • 8:00 am: breakfast at participants’ accommodation
  • 9:00 am: departure to the hospital and start of the workday
  • 12:00 pm – 2:00 pm: lunch break
  • 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm: work at the hospital
  • 8:00 pm: dinner at participants’ accommodation

 

Weekends are free, giving you time to explore and enjoy the country.

Project information

Your accommodation

Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.

You will be accommodated with other volunteers in shared rooms of 4 to 8 people (non-mixed). You will have access to a shared bathroom.

In the city center, you will find ATMs, convenience stores, a few shops, and restaurants.

Meals​

Three meals per day are included on week days (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). On weekends, two meals per day are included (brunch and dinner).

The food mainly consists of a mix of local and Western cuisines. Please contact us regarding any dietary restrictions.
