Description

Program description

This nursing and medical internship in Kathmandu is perfectly suited for students looking to validate their academic year, just like all of our nursing and medical internships abroad.

The partner hospitals are located in the heart of Kathmandu. These facilities welcome both middle-class patients and those from underprivileged families, often unable to afford medical care.

The hospital provides the following services:

  • Emergency care
  • Surgical procedures
  • Maternity services
  • Outpatient consultations

You will therefore have the opportunity to observe a wide variety of cases ranging from general medicine to surgical cases, as well as maternal and child care and emergency procedures.

Your role as an intern

The main role of interns is to assist the healthcare staff, support them in their daily tasks, and help during busy periods. As there are often more patients than available staff, the need for assistance is constant, and the contribution of international students is valuable throughout the year.

Here are some examples of tasks you may be asked to perform:

  • Assist medical staff in their daily duties.
  • Contribute to the daily medical report of each patient.
  • Apply bandages.
  • Participate in educational and preventive workshops.
  • Observe and participate in patient diagnosis.

Tasks are assigned based on the intern’s level of skill. Beginners may primarily observe, while advanced or professional interns can take on a more active role. Under no circumstances will participants be allowed to work alone. They will always be paired with a local healthcare professional.

Schedule and supervision

Regular check-ins are scheduled during your internship with a supervisor who is part of the hospital staff:

  • Orientation session at the start of the program
  • Daily check-ins at the placement site
  • Weekly progress meetings

You will work more than 25 hours per week to meet the requirements of the medical team. Tasks and schedules are flexible and may vary depending on the hospital’s current needs.

The team mainly speaks English, but some knowledge of Nepali can be helpful.

Your accommodation

Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.

You will be accommodated in a volunteer house with shared rooms. The house is located about five kilometers from the city center, where you can find everything you might need (supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants, ATMs, etc.).

There are many taxis and other means of transportation around the accommodation. There are also several ATMs in the area.

Meals

Breakfast and dinner are included. However, participants will be responsible for their own lunch expenses, which can be purchased at the internship site.

Meals are a mix of Western and Nepalese food, mainly consisting of vegetarian dishes with rice and vegetables. You can expect to have a chicken dish about once a week.

It is possible to adjust meals according to your dietary needs, but you must inform us in advance.

Once there

The tasks of the trainees depend entirely on their skills and are defined by the medical protocols in force. We will not leave the entire responsibility of a patient to students with limited language skills.

Please note: Not all nurses speak English, so there will be an unavoidable language barrier, however they are very patient and take the time to explain their procedures to students. If a communication problem arises at the internship site, students can ask the local coordinator for help.
