Program description

This nursing internship program in Zanzibar will allow you to develop essential skills for your professional journey. You will be placed in a reputable local hospital where you will gain in-depth knowledge of the local medical system.

 

The hospital where you will complete your internship is the main referral center in Zanzibar, bringing together several specialized departments, including maternity, neurology, pediatrics, physiotherapy, dental care, general surgery, and many others. Check the brochure for more information.

 

Aims and Objectives

The main objective is to assist the local nursing staff and provide support in carrying out the many tasks they will assign to you.

Beyond the clinical experience, participants will discover Zanzibar’s healthcare system, contribute to community health, and engage in local culture, making this program both enriching and well-rounded.

 

Intern Responsibilities

  • Observe and provide support to nurses in their daily tasks.
  • Assist and contribute to administering medication to patients.
  • Take patients’ vital signs.
  • Record the medical history of all patients.
  • Observe local doctors/nurses during surgeries and other medical procedures.
  • Take part in basic care, wound management, blood pressure measurement, and preparation of medication.
  • Assist patients in their daily needs (meals, dressing, bathing, etc.).
  • Participate in health awareness campaigns for children in local schools.

 

The practical experience will be determined by the supervising specialist.

You will gain genuine field experience alongside professionals, applying the knowledge acquired during your studies to real-life situations.

 

Sample Schedule

Monday of the 1st week

  • Breakfast at the accommodation
  • First day of the program. Orientation and introduction to the local staff and the hospital’s operations are scheduled.
  • Lunch break
  • The program continues in the afternoon at the hospital.
  • After the day, enjoy some well-deserved rest
  • Dinner at the accommodation

 

From Tuesday to Friday

  • Breakfast
  • Work at the local hospital according to your specialty
  • Lunch break
  • Resume work
  • Dinner at the accommodation

 

Saturdays and Sundays are free for you to rest and take time to explore the surroundings.
