Description

Program description

We are working with 4 hospitals in Cambodia that have agreed to host 35 students at a time for the whole year, as part of a medical internship.

If students are flexible and interested in an educational project, we also work with schools in the same sector, so it would be possible to spend 1 or 2 weeks of internship on an educational project in Cambodia to carry out preventative work. Trainees will be placed according to their request for specialisation and the availability and needs of each hospital.

Like all of our nursing and medical internship programs abroad, this project in Cambodia allows students to gain university credits while acquiring field experience and contributing to the UN’s goal of universal access to healthcare.

Areas of care and services (non-exhaustive list):

– Physiotherapy

– Pediatrics

– Maternity

– HIV prevention and care for adults and children

– Surgery

– Dentistry

Hospitals in Phnom Penh

Our partner hospitals in Phnom Penh receive several hundred patients a day, most of them from disadvantaged communities. Some facilities are training centres funded by international humanitarian organisations to train local health care personnel and provide free care to thousands of patients without access to existing medical facilities.

The hospitals have between 100 and 400 employees, the majority of whom are Cambodian nationals. In some hospitals, healthcare personnel have been trained by international practitioners, all of whom are volunteer health professionals sent by international NGOs.

Trainee tasks

It should be noted that the trainees will mainly have an observation role and will assist the doctors, nurses and all the hospital staff in their daily tasks during the internship within this association. Surgical placements are available to those with 3 years of education (or health care professionals).

Those with international experience will also be able to participate in public health and prevention missions for rural and poor populations.

Your accommodation

Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.

The volunteer house has just been renovated to make volunteers and interns feel at home. Located in a good neighborhood, near a local market, restaurants, and convenience stores, the house is only a 7 minute tuk tuk ride or 17 minute walk from the Russian Market.

The volunteer house has electricity, hot and cold water, and a place to store food. It also has an internet access. The rooms are composed of single and double beds with bedding and fans provided. Volunteers can expect to share a room with one or two other volunteers. The house also has a dining room on the first floor, a living room with TV and books.

Single rooms are available for an additional $25 per day.

Meals

The meals are typically Cambodian. Breakfasts usually consist of bread, omelette and coffee. Dinner consists of a series of dishes cooked by the staff on site such as rice or noodles with vegetables or meat. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available upon request.

Once there

Local transportation

Students can share a tuktuk. Allow 2-3$ per day for local transportation.

Donations

Donations are not required as an amount to support local communities is included in the registration fee. If students wish, they may bring additional donations. The NGOs are particularly in need of toys, children's books, school supplies, hygiene products (toothbrushes for example). Visits to local schools can be organised by the NGO to distribute the donations.
