The project you will be doing as part of the humanitarian internship is in the beautiful colonial city of Merida, where you will dedicate your time to helping rural communities.
The project is located in the beautiful colonial city of Merida. You will spend most of your time on construction sites, working with rural communities. This will include many different projects such as helping to maintain and renovate infrastructure and buildings such as schools, children's playgrounds, retirement homes, gardens, sports fields and beaches.
Like all of our humanitarian internship programs abroad, the project in Mexico allows you to gain university credits while making a positive and lasting impact on the local community.
The local organisation is based in Mérida, capital of the state of Yucatán in the Yucatán Peninsula, southern Mexico. Like most colonial cities, this one has large central squares, beautiful cathedrals, colourful buildings, restaurants, many cultural and artistic centres and museums. It is the center of a great mixture of Mayan and Spanish traditions and history.
Many local public schools and community projects need help maintaining buildings and gardens and building new facilities. Depending on funding, you can even participate in organic garden projects and river or beach clean-ups. Some of your activities will intersect with those of other participants on other projects.
Monday to Friday
Your workload during this humanitarian internship will vary depending on the project, and you may not be at the same site all day. You can expect to work 3-6 hours a day as manual labour in the Yucatan is demanding due to the humidity. You will have lunch at the centre or nearby.
The working hours are between 7:00 am and 4:30 pm approximately, depending on the tasks of the day, which gives you plenty of time to immerse yourself in the project and get to know the other participants and the local stakeholders.
This schedule is subject to change due to weather, local conditions and unforeseen circumstances.
Environmental projects (which include this humanitarian internship) are also eager for workers when funds are available to finance projects and materials. We strive to be flexible to meet the needs of the community: painting and maintenance of buildings, construction assistance, maintenance of green spaces and assistance with local agricultural and environmental projects. If you stay for more than 4 weeks, you can expect a variety of assignments.
