Travel to the crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean and work on marine conservation projects among the beautiful islands of the Seychelles through this environmental NGO internship. You will live and work in this tropical paradise with the research team. Benefit from in-depth monitoring and training by our experienced specialists on site, while contributing to the marine conservation of the various sites in the region. For this, you will carry out diving sessions, and participate in raising awareness among communities and tourists.
You will contribute to various conservation-related surveys aimed at providing data to local government on coral reef research. Like all of our internship programs on the environment, the NGO environment internship in the Seychelles allows you to gain university credits while having a positive and lasting impact on the ecosystem of the region.
It includes a more in-depth follow-up with a theoretical part that adds to the practical experience in the field. In addition to receiving the necessary ECTS credits to validate your year, at the end of the program you will obtain an international certification recognised and delivered by the University of Richmond, in the United States. You will have two online course modules to complete before the field mission, to prepare you for the project. During but also after the internship, you will benefit from professional support: a specialised internship supervisor will monitor your work and give you a final evaluation, and you will benefit from access to a portal of job offers in NGOs as well as a recommendation from your internship supervisor on LinkedIn.

The primary objective of the internship program is to provide you with professional survey techniques for collecting underwater reef health data. The objective of this program is to increase local and global awareness of marine issues and to be able to provide data that will play a key role in making political decisions regarding the future of this marine ecosystem. You will specialise in fish, coral or invertebrate research techniques during your initial training to prepare for your dives. The training will include learning to identify various species and learning to take measurements underwater as well as an introduction to marine conservation. Once the training is completed and depending on the weather conditions, you will be able to perform dives to carry out marine research. In addition to diving, you should expect to participate in other projects and activities, including training sessions, marine debris surveys and pickups, and environmental education sessions.
Participants of this environmental NGO internship work approximately 40-45 hours per week, with 2 days off per week, most often at weekends.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, local NGOs and government agencies, you will participate in the following activities:
– Training 4 weeks before your departure in order to be operational as soon as you arrive.
– Monitoring and collecting data on coral reefs according to the seasons to study their state.
– Studying the different marine species in order to send them to OBIS Seamap which gathers information on marine species from all over the world.
– Depending on the season, observations on the migration of whale sharks, invertebrates, turtles, plankton, etc.
– Participate in the coral restoration project (collection, cleaning, transplanting to new sites, depending on the season).
– Train local partners on environmental research.
– Participate in seabed cleaning dives
– Environmental awareness and education.

Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.
All meals are provided by us and prepared by the participants. Breakfasts include eggs, bacon, toast, pancakes, cereal and fruit. Lunch and dinner vary according to the tastes of the participants at that time. Common meals include curries, stir fries, pastas, pies and salads. Many participants also buy their own snacks.
We are based in a protected nature reserve which means the signal does not cover the whole area. There are places where phone coverage is good and we have a phone on base for emergencies. For a high-speed connection, our participants go to the many Internet cafes in Victoria.
Depending on the duration of the project, the following training will be provided to participants:
Training in the use of O2 and decompression equipment, first aid, PADI Advanced Open Water, PADI Coral Reef Research Diver
