Animal Caretaker
Put your knowledge into practice with this veterinary internship in the heart of Portugal. You will work alongside professional veterinarians and carry out various assignments with local abandoned or abused animals. You will deepen your knowledge and gain international work experience, and contribute to species conservation through your positive and lasting impact on local animals. You will be permanently supervised by an internship supervisor who will evaluate and follow your progress throughout your project.
In this program, trainees can apply the skills they have learned in real clinical cases and contribute to the protection of abandoned and abused animals. The program is open to both veterinary students and licensed veterinarians; there will always be a technical supervisor at the internship site.
Like all of our animal internship programs abroad, this project in Portugal allows you to gain university credits while contributing to the conservation of the region’s wildlife.

Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.
Accommodation is provided in the volunteers' house, in shared rooms for a maximum of 8 people. Students will have access to the common room, the outdoor areas including the garden and the pool to relax. WIFI is available throughout the house and is free.
Meals are prepared every day, they are local cuisine but it is possible to adapt to specific diets on request (vegetarian, vegan, lactose free, gulten free, etc).
Being a veterinary professional or student is a plus for this internship! However, this project is not exclusively limited to these individuals.
