Description

Program description

The study and observation of wildlife, the interactions with the animals of the reserve are the basis for all those who intend to work for sustainable development. This training, which includes 2 expeditions per day with researchers and guides in the heart of South Africa, provides access to a unique practical and theoretical education while contributing to the protection of threatened species. Expect to see buffalo, leopards, rhinos, elephants and the famous Big 5!

Like all of our training courses for working in the environment abroad , this project in South Africa allows you to benefit from complete learning while contributing to the preservation of the region’s ecosystems.

This project is part of the so-called career training:

This vocational training program is part of the so-called “career” projects. In addition to the mission that you carry out on site, it allows you to benefit from real support, and to access the position of project coordinator in 6 months. Here you combine theoretical training with practical learning, with online modules to be completed after the end of the mission. At the end of the program, you obtain an international certification recognized and issued by the University of Richmond, in the United States.

The accompaniment is therefore present upstream, on site but also downstream of the project. During the course of the mission, you will also have a remote project to carry out: you will have to solve a problem with other partner organizations in marine conservation, environment, animal protection… A coach will follow you and support you in solving these problems, and at the end of the project you will have access to a platform of job offers in NGOs to work for sustainable development.

Remote projects included in professional training will be carried out AFTER having carried out the mission in the field.

If your training lasts 4-11 weeks, you will work on a remote project for a period of 4 weeks after completing the field assignment.
If your training lasts 12 weeks or more, you will work on 2 remote projects for a duration of 8 weeks after completing the field mission.

Take a closer look at all the specificities of this training as a career program !

The strengths of the program:

  • Learn how to preserve wildlife in South Africa
  • Follow the animals of the reserve daily
  • Understand the importance of wildlife and their natural environment
  • Identify the predators of herbivores (lions, cheetahs VS elephants, rhinoceroses…)
  • Mastering telemetry and learning to record animal movements

Objective of the mission in the nature reserve

Our reserve is committed to the conservation of the local ecosystem, to face the various challenges now present. Indeed, for many years human encroachment has only increased, leading to the destruction of the habitat of these animals, developing poaching which causes the decline of these species.

This environmental training aims to:

  • Contribute to research and studies on local fauna and flora.
  • Raise awareness and encourage local communities to collaborate in conservation efforts.
  • Monitor all species (lions, buffaloes, elephants, hyenas, cheetahs…) to collect data on their movements, behaviors.
  • Follow with the anti-poaching unit the white rhinos on a daily basis.
  • Control, maintain and renovate the fence to ensure the safety of the animals.
  • Protect habitats by eradicating invasive alien plants.
  • Raising awareness of environmental conservation within community schools.
  • Train yourself to work for sustainable development.

Training: working for sustainable development

All training is included in this program, no specific skills are required to participate in the project. You will benefit from a complete information session upon your arrival at the camp.

The project takes place in the heart of the Limpopo reserve in South Africa, 5 hours by car from Johannesburg airport. Recognized as one of the richest regions in terms of varieties of wild species, many organizations wish to protect the environment and the animals on site.

The objective of this training is to sensitize the participants and to instruct them on the various stakes of the protection of the local ecosystem, so that they in turn transmit this message and to enable them to work for the sustainable development. There are no small actions, every gesture counts!

Your accommodation

Housing is allocated by local NGOs, not by Freepackers - the descriptions are there to give you an idea of the type of accommodation, as it is very likely that conditions will vary on site depending on the number of volunteers, weather conditions, availability, etc. Each volunteer will be accommodated according to the stated conditions, but it is possible that the accommodation may not match the description or images shown on this site word for word, for example, in the case of annexed housing, renovations, relocations, etc.

In the heart of the Karongwe Game Reserve in Limpopo Province, you will sleep in large rooms, shared with other participants with a common bathroom. Always with the objective of a sustainable ecological impact, the base camp is powered by solar energy and rainwater.

Meals

The first 3 months, meals are included and the following 3 months, they are at the expense of the participants.

At breakfast, you will find cereals, fresh fruit (depending on availability) and oats. Expect to find salads (depending on availability), pasta, rice or sandwiches. Meals are prepared by the local teams and participants, and vary according to desires and available products. The meals are often vegetarian and prepared with non-perishable food.

Once there

Communication

On the base camp, the telephone network is rather good as is the wifi connection, paying in the form of a voucher. However, we recommend that you bring a local SIM card upon your arrival to guarantee this good internet connection.
