Marine Conservation in Spain

Useful information

Barcelona is a seaside city with abundant culture, legendary architecture, sunny beaches and picturesque neighbourhoods.
Barcelona’s history is synonymous with the Mediterranean and a maritime tradition that dates back to Roman times. The city has thrived thanks to its geographical location; its coastline represents a wide range of resources and activities for residents and travelers. However, this relationship with the sea has meant that the coastal seabed has been seriously affected by the presence of large quantities of urban waste that threaten marine species and destroy the ecosystem.

Like all of our programs for a gap year . As an ocean conservation volunteer, you will use and improve your marine diving skills while actively participating in the restoration of the marine ecosystem of Catalonia and the Mediterranean. It is also an opportunity to join a non-profit diving club as part of various projects with a social and environmental impact.

The objective: to support marine conservation efforts and contribute to the fight against ocean pollution. Daily tasks may vary depending on the time of year, for example:

- Clean the seabed to reduce debris;

- Inform about the logging of items and waste collected;

- Remove living marine organisms from collected waste and return them to the sea;

- Document and collect information on fauna – fish and invertebrates – in a biodiversity area monitored as part of a scientific research project;

If your mission takes place during the summer, you could also have the opportunity to help in summer camps for underprivileged children by introducing them to diving or by developing workshops on the sea and the environment.

Feel free to note in your application when applying for the program if you have existing scuba certifications. If you already have certifications, you will need to send a copy along with your logbook to our local team in Spain – Barcelona before your program begins.

All participants are also required to provide a medical certificate authorizing them to dive.
